2. Conservation-oriented Society
We need to make better use of our resources. In developingcountries, we have more than enough, provided we are lesswasteful in our ways. Fortunately, we can improve. Thechallenge lies not so much with “technical fixes” but withour approach to our world around us. In the recent past, wewere engaged in a “Wild West” economy, supposing thatthere would always be enough resources. Now we know thereare no new horizons to explore and exploit. One image toillustrate this is to think of the earth as a spaceship, wheremost materials have to be recycled. For us , “moving on”will be a case of leaving behind the throw-away society and
advancing to a conservation-oriented society.
To qualify as citizens of a conservation-oriented society, wemust change traditional attitudes and thoughts. We need torecognize that there is rarely such a thing as “waste”,rather, there are materials which sometimes end up in thewrong place. The transition has already begun. In the main, the conservation-oriented society depends on thecommitment of individuals. But they can be encouraged bygovernment incentive and penalties, which should apply atleast as strongly to industry and other commercial interests.
3. Heroes
Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero
worship. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is atrue hero?
Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.
A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.
Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like high-voltage transformer, heroes take the energy of higher power and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.
The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure text for would-be heroes is what or
whom do they serve, what they are willing to live and die for. If the answer of evidence suggests that they serve only their own fame, they may be the famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson and Zhang Ziyi are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant. Heroes are catalysts for change. They have a vision from mountaintop. They have the skill and the charm to move the
masses. They create new possibilities. Without Condi, Indiamight still be a part of the British Empire. Without RoseParks and Martin Luther King, people in the USA might stillhave segregated buses, restaurants, and parks. It may bepossible for large scale change to occur without leaders withmagnetic personalities, but the pace of change would beslow, the vision uncertain, and the committee meetingendless.
