An Introduction to Myself
Hey there! My name is Alex, and I'm a high school student getting ready to apply to colleges. I figured an essay introducing myself would be a good way to practice my writing skills and give any admissions officers a glimpse into who I am beyond just my grades and test scores.
To start, I'll give a little background about my family. I'm an only child, raised by my mom and dad in a small suburb outside a major city. My parents have been together since college and are both professionals - my dad is an accountant and my mom is a marketing manager. Though their careers keep them busy, they've always made an effort to be very involved in my life. grateful they exposed me to so many different cultures, activities, and ways of thinking from a young age.
In terms of my own interests and personality, I'd say I'm a pretty well-rounded and driven individual. Academically, I've always enjoyed the STEM fields, particularly math, computer science, and biology. There's something so fascinating to me about how the building blocks of our universe follow such precise, elegant rules and fit together in infinitely complex ways. At the same time, I have a creative side and love subjects like art, music, and English literature. I've played piano since elementary school and am currently teaching myself guitar. Outside of academics, I'm a huge sports fan, especially basketball. I'm also passionate about environmental protection and sustainability. Seeing firsthand both the incredible beauty of our natural world and the very real threats it faces due to human activity was life-changing. It sparked my interest in learning as much as I can about environmental science and potential solutions.
On a more casual level, I love movies, TV shows, video games - anything that tells a compelling story, really. I'm the kind of person who can't just passively consume that kind of
entertainment; I always find myself analyzing themes, character motivations, plot details. Discussing, debating, and dissecting these stories endlessly with my friends is one of my favorite pastimes.
In terms of my future plans and aspirations, I'm really passionate about the field of artificial intelligence and hope to pursue a career developing AI systems and studying the technical and ethical implications of this powerful, rapidly advancing technology. I'm in awe of how quickly AI is progressing and the potential it holds to help solve major
challenges facing humanity like disease, climate change, poverty, you name it. At the same time, I'm very cognizant of the risks and thorny philosophical questions around AI consciousness, decision-making, and control.
I firmly believe AI will be one of the most consequential forces shaping the world I'll live the rest of my life in, for better or worse. So I want to play an active role and put my
problem-solving skills to use in ensuring artificial intelligence is developed and applied in a safe, responsible, ethical manner that benefits humanity as a whole. That's a lofty goal for sure, but I'm naturally a very ambitious, driven person who isn't afraid to dream big.
On a more personal note, some of my core values that will guide me in whatever path I pursue include being a lifelong learner, thinking critically about complex issues, and having empathy for different perspectives. I'm the kind of person who loves constantly asking questions, playing devil's advocate, and seeing things from multiple angles. At the same time, I try hard to be open-minded, put myself in others' shoes, and understand where they're coming from even if I disagree. I believe productive discourse and being willing to evolve your views is key to solving our toughest individual and societal problems.
I also place a huge emphasis on maintaining integrity, authenticity, and staying true to my moral principles. I'm not afraid to make my voice heard, stand up for what I believe in, and be my fully authentic self. I'd like to think I'm a pretty caring, thoughtful individual who treats others with kindness and respect. But I also have a silly, goofy side that loves cracking dumb jokes with friends and not taking myself too seriously all the time.
