These let you have real-time conversations by typing back and forth really quickly. It was almost like being in the same room as the person you were talking to, except through your computer screen. I remember using AOL Instant Messenger to chat with my cousins when I was little - we'd send each other funny emoticons and silly jokes all the time!
Nowadays, we mostly use texting and messaging apps like WhatsApp to keep in touch. I love how I can send a quick text to my friends to make plans to hang out, or bother my older sister with memes when I'm bored. Grownups use messaging for work too - my dad is always on Slack talking to his coworkers and colleagues. Speaking of phones, smartphones and mobile internet made it even easier to talk to people wherever you are. I can video chat with my grandparents who live in another state just by tapping

With them, you can instantly share photos, videos, announcements, and life updates with all your friends and family at once. My uncle loves to post about his vacations so the whole family can see where he's going and what he's doing. My mom is always sharing pictures of our dog or videos of me and my sister at our dance recitals so our relatives don't miss out.
The internet also lets you meet people from all around the world that you'd never get to talk to otherwise. There are websites and forums for every hobby and interest where you can connect with others who are into the same stuff as you. I met a bunch of kids from Australia, Japan, and Brazil who are also obsessed with the cartoon Bluey and we're all online friends now. We send each other fan art and have watched the show together over video chat!
I even use the internet to learn new skills from people on YouTube or get homework help from online tutors. Last year when I was strugglingSistering with fractions, I found these

Too much time spent communicating through screens can also make it harder to have real conversations and read people's body language and emotions. I notice that my older cousins sometimes have trouble making eye contact or don't know how to act in person because they're so used to just texting and posting on Instagram. That's why it's important to still see your friends face-to-face, not just through a phone or computer! Overall though, I really do think the internet has brought the world closer together and made it simpler to stay in touch with people no matter how far apart you are. I can't imagine having to wait weeks for a letter to get updates from my relatives now! As long as we're smart and safe about it, this modern way of talking to each other is pretty amazing. Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. Today I want to tell you all about the internet and how it changed the way people communicate and interact with one another. The internet is pretty cool and useful, but it has also changed things in some big ways that are important to think about.
When my parents and grandparents were kids, there was no internet at all! Can you imagine that? No YouTube, no Google, no social media like Instagram or Snapchat. The only way people could communicate from far away was by sending letters through the mail, making long distance phone calls (which was really expensive), or maybe sending a fax machine message if they were lucky.
My grandma told me that when she was little, she had a pen pal who lived in another country that she would write letters back and forth with. It would take weeks for the letters to arrive after being sent! These days, with email, texts, video calls and messaging apps, I can talk to my friends across town or even in other countries instantly. We can share photos, videos, links and more with just a few taps on our phones or tablets. That's one big way the internet revolutionized communication.
Another huge change is social media. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and others allow people to share updates about
their lives through text posts, photos and videos that their friends and followers can all see and interact with. My parents say it's like being able to send out a virtual newsletter about your life to anyone who wants to subscribe to it. I don't have any social media accounts yet since I'm too young, but I see my older siblings and cousins using it all the time to connect with their friends. broadcasting, online messaging apps, virtual reality social spaces and more. People can now virtually attend events, meetings or classes from anywhere in the world in realtime. Or they can record videos and podcasts to share ideas and experiences asynchronously. The possibilities seem endlessly creative! Another big impact I've noticed is how the internet and digital communication seems to be changing language itself. New slang words, abbreviations and emojis are constantly evolving to fit this new method of communicating. Instead of saying \"I'm embarrassed,\" someone might send the 😳 emoji. Or they might type \"lol\" instead of saying \"laughing out loud.\" My
older siblings and their friends use so much lingo and shorthand in their texts and social media posts that I can barely understand it sometimes! It's like they're speaking a different dialect of English. I have to ask them to translate slang words like \"slay,\" \"tea,\" \"wig,\" etc. And don't even get me started on the very latest TikTok or Twitter memes and trends!
Another aspect of online communication is that it can allow you to connect with people all over the world with shared interests, no matter how niche. My brother is really into a certain indie rock band, but none of his friends at school have ever heard of them. But online he's part of a big fan community with message boards, group chats, livestream watch parties and more. He's made friends with other fans from across the country and world through the internet. My sister is really into D&D and she plays in an online campaign with people from several different states. The internet makes it possible to find your \"tribe\" for even the most obscure hobbies and interests.
So those are some of the big ways I see the internet impacting how people communicate and connect in today's world. We have abilities that would seem like magic to previous generations! But there's also a lot of new moral, social and personal questions around these technologies that we all have to
grapple with. Like how do we create a healthy balance between virtual and in-person interactions? How much personal information should we share online? How can we spot misinformation or protect ourselves from online predators? These are just some of the issues my teachers and parents say my generation will have to stay on top of as we grow up in an increasingly digital age.
At the end of the day though, I think the internet and new communication technologies are a net positive overall in terms of connecting people in amazing new ways. Have you ever thought about how different the world is today compared to when your parents or grandparents were kids? One of the biggest differences is the internet. The internet has changed so many things about how we live, work, learn, and even how we talk to our friends and family. Let me tell you all about it!
When I was really little, my parents used to call my
grandparents on a thing called a \"landline\" telephone. It was this big clunky phone attached to the wall with a curly cord. They could only talk to people in our town or maybe the next town over because long-distance calls were too expensive. Can you imagine only being able to talk to the people who lived right near you? That would be so weird!
Nowadays, with the internet, I can talk to pretty much anyone, anywhere in the whole world, for free! All I need is my tablet or my parents' smartphone. I can video chat with my

We can share pictures and videos, play online games together, and just catch up really easily. The internet has made keeping in touch with distant friends and relatives so much easier. The internet has also allowed totally new forms of communication that simply didn't exist before. For example, there are all kinds of online communities and discussion forums where people can chat about their shared interests. I'm part of an online Minecraft group where we give each other tips, share our coolest creations, and even host virtual meetups and events. Without the internet, such a large community of fans spread all over the world could never exist.
