My First Day of English Training at the Center

This question reminds me of an awkward situation at this Monday morning’s opening ceremony. Frankly speaking, with the foreign teachers and Chinese teachers speaking English fast, I found it somewhat difficult to catch what they said. I could not catch a number of words, let alone understand many sentences. I could not understand these sentences, let alone comprehend their main ideas. Therefore, the realization that I have a lot of shortcomings in the English listening comprehension as well as vocabulary caused me to make up my mind on the spot to study hard in the following 18 weeks of this term. I am sure that I will be able to learn a lot from my teachers. This is how I felt at the opening ceremony. (123 words)

The Internet is very popular with people nowadays. It helps us to deal with a lot of daily work. Frankly speaking, today people all over the world cannot work without it. Furthermore, according to the UN, the people who are unable to use computers and the Internet these days are considered (to be) illiterate. Obviously, surfing on the Internet and chatting to friends on QQ are very marvelous. To send e-mails through the Internet and to buy/purchase commodities on it are very convenient. In fact, today whether a person will be able to be successful in his/her work or not depends to some extent on his/her access to the Internet. Hence, that the Internet has become an extremely important tool is an undeniable fact.

Four infants died in China’s city five years ago. It all seemed normal. But strangely enough, these four infants had all taken the same brand of the milk powder produced by Sanlu Group. According to media, the milk powder contaminated with Melamine caused the four infants to suffer from a kidney stone disease. The horrible news made my blood run cold and my flesh creep. Most terribly at first Sanlu did not tell the truth to the families of victims. Finally, the New Zealand Government informed the Chinese government of this issue. After that same investigators worked (for) a long time. By that time, the contaminated milk powder had led up a kidney stone disease among so many infants. By the way, believe it or not, I won’t drink any milk later.

Story title: To the Mayor Chengdu Story number: 6 Dear Sir,

The choice of civilized hygienic cities through a public evaluation ended last year. The purpose of this campaign was to improve our living environment. However, Chengdu failed to be nominated as a civilized hygienic city last year. The outcome made the Chengdu people much disappointed. For example, I often see some children piss anywhere in public and hear many adults talk loudy in restaurants. You offer some help in somebody. But you hear no thanks for your offer of help. I inform you of these ugly phenomena. Of course, this situation won’t last (for) a long time, will it? Chengdu will succeed in winning back the title of civilized hygienic city next year.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Spring Festival usually begins in February of the solar calendar. All the Chinese people and immigrants at home and abroad are so excited during the festival. The Chinese people and immigrants under the sun celebrate it in a variety of ways. In China, I often see children set off fireworks at night and hear adults say \"Happy New Year\" to each other on the first day of the Chinese New Year. Usually, adults give their children some money as a gift on the first day of the Chinese New Year. These exciting situations always remind me of my own childhood. In fact, the festival atmosphere of this kind has lasted (for) thousands of years in our country; it will last forever. Interestingly enough, I always look forward to watching the special CCTV program on the eve of the Chinese New Year. I wish you to have a nice time in the coming festival. (146 words)

Spring has come

Spring has come. Peach Flowers in Longquanyi District have turned pink (will blossom soon). With the district being busy with the preparation for the annual international peach flower fair, the festival atmosphere there is getting more and more exciting.

Firstly, the bosses of village inns there have got ready to welcome visitors coming from different parts of the world. Located in mountains full of peach flowers, pear flowers, cherry flowers and rape flowers, most of these village inns are very attractive. Visitors can hear swallows singing songs here and there and see rape flowers dancing (dance) a dance in a field.

Secondly, providing visitors with a variety of entertainments of high quality, these inns are very popular with visitors.

Thirdly, many excellent chefs involved in the services of these inns during the peach flowers fair, visitors can at better-than-usual food.

Hence, frankly speaking, Longquanyi’s reputation for its village inns is well known and well deserved.

Grammar warehouse: participles B

I quite agree with the view that the government of a country should encourage its people to smoke cigarettes. These are enough good reasons why I think this way.

First, being an important source of the government revenue, the tobacco industry is able to make the government earn a lot of money.

Secondly, with a large number of people employed in factories, encouraging people to smoke cigarette enables many people to have jobs.

Thirdly, compared with drug-taking, cigarette-smoking is not always dangerous to smoker’s health. In an attempt to illustrate my view, let me use an example, the late leading Deng Xiaoping, who smoked cigarette all his life without any smoking-related diseases diagnosed.

Fourthly, smoking is manly and womanly. Pictured in newspaper and on the internet, a smoking man and woman looks very cool.

Finally, judging from my past smoking experience, smoking also makes socializing easier.

To conclude, based on the above several benefits in smoking, the government of a country, I think, should encourage its people to smoke cigarettes.

Date: March 13, 2013 Story title: -ed, -ing时态 Story number: 10

Grammar warehouse: participles B

Frankly, I disagree with the view that the government of a country should encourage its people to smoke.

First of all, being harmful to smokers’ health, smoking leads up to a variety of kinds of diseases. For example, many smokers die young every year.

Secondly, with a great many smokers suffering from smoking related diseases, the medical cost of treating these disease has become a burden on a country.

Thirdly, annoyed at their husbands smoking cigarettes day in and any day out anywhere and worried about their health, many smokers’ wives begin to force their husbands give up smoking.

Therefore, taking everything into account, the government of a country should not encourage its people to smoke.

Dear Boss,

In order to improve my English level, you sent me to this training center. Four weeks pasted, and now I would like to report what I have learnt so far.

First of all, I find it extremely important to better my English writing level. Hence, I have no alternative but to study so hard. I know, not to study hard is to destroy myself. Now, to write out short stories from my memory everyday becomes a must.

Also, I see the need to do some grammar exercises every week. Therefore, I was too busy to write you or send you an e-mail. Interestingly enough, sometimes my roommates hear me speak English in my dream.

Referring to entertainment, I would rather stay in dormitories on weekends, reading books, than go out for fun. If you don’t believe it you’d better come and see it in person. Frankly speaking, all of my classmates study hard; they should belong to those kinds of people responsible for important work in their units in future. Well, it’s nice to share my English studies with you.

Date: March 20, 2013 Story title: operate casinos Story number: 12

Grammar warehouse: the use of infinitives

I quite agree with the idea that the Chinese government should allow operating casinos inland. There are three reasons for my standpoint.

First of all, these days, the Chinese people are so busy making money and hence I see the need to provide people with more places of entertainment. With this mind, to run casinos here in the inland should be a good operation.

Secondly, in order to gamble at casinos, many Chinese people nowadays have no alternative but to go to abroad or to Macao. Hence, to prevent a large amount of RMB from flowing out of China, the government should operate casinos in the inland.

Thirdly, it is the Chinese people’s nature to gamble. I often see people play mahjong here and there along the street. Some people would rather stay at home playing mahjong than go out for fun. Therefore, provide that the government ran casinos in the inland many gambles would choose to play at casinos instead of making trouble outside. Clearly, one of the important objectives of running casinos inland is to set up a harmonious world.

In according, I consider is extremely necessary for the government to run casinos inland. (184 words)

Date: March 20, 2013 Story title: shut casinos Story number: 13

Grammar warehouse: the use of infinitives

I quite disagree with this idea.

First, to run casinos inland will be to destroy the hardworking spirit of our people. It is the Chinese people's nature to work hard for money. But gambling teaches people not to work hard for it.

Secondly, I see no need to run them inland as there have been many lotteries inland. Frankly speaking, lotteries are a kind of gambling. I often hear many lottery ticket buyers win special prizes and become billionaires over night.

Thirdly, to run casinos may make some people start on the road to crimes. According to media, in order to get money to gamble at casinos abroad some Chinese gamblers are reported to embezzle a large amount of money from their working unit.

All in all, in order to set up a harmonious society, the government should not operate casinos here in the inland.

Grammar warehouse: the use of gerund(动名词)

Dear Xiao Hua,

Receiving your letter of February 28th, I couldn’t help responding to you at once. You are right not punishing these illegal taxis means slowing down the realization of Chengdu’s four modernizations. Last week I invited some official concerned to my office to discuss how to deal with present situation. Now they are all active taking various measures to punish illegal taxis. According to them, they have made significant accomplishments in terms of punishing illegal taxis and maintaining the normal economic order.

However, they still have got great difficulties (in) coping with the present situation. One of the difficulties is that they have trouble (in) acquiring some proofs. (This kind of work involves acquiring proofs). The act of laying a trip (snare) for catching ensnaring illicit taxis motorists does not work well. Furthermore, more often than not, it is no use/good doing so.

What is worse, some illicit taxi motorists even did something like scolding and beating law enforcement officials. Not only were some law enforcement officials beaten by some illicit taxi motorists, but some of them also come close to losing their lives. Anyway, I am sure that these officials will insist on working hard to punish these illicit taxis. On the other hand, I am looking forward to cooperating with you guys and creating together a harmonious city of Chengdu. By the way, how about coming to my office and having a talk with me someday?

Yours sincerely,

Story title: shut down Internet bar (1) - agree Story number: 15

Grammar warehouse: the use of gerund(动名词)

Referring to Internet bars, I can’t resist expressing the view that the Chinese government should shut down all the Internet bars here in China. Closing them may lead up to some positive effects.

First, closing Internet bars means releasing many youngsters from an ill environment. It is known that an Internet bar is a place which shelters evil people and countenances evil practices. Therefore, once making friends with some evil people at an Internet bar, teenagers may have great difficulties extricating themselves from trouble.

Secondly, the act of shutting down all the Internet bars can prevent youngsters from being addicted to some violent Internet games. It has been reported that some teenagers would like to imitate some violent behaviors in games and do something awful like attacking others and even shooting them.

Thirdly, with Internet bars shut down youngsters can avoid being hurt to the awful conditions of Internet bars, which are usually smoggy, smell and devoid of fresh air.

All of all, now that there are some positive effects in shutting down Internet bars, China should close down all of them now. (185 words)

Date: March 27, 2013

Story title: SHUT DOWN INTERNET BAR (2) - DISAGREE Story number: 16

Grammar warehouse: the use of gerund(动名词)

As far as I am concerned, I disagree with this view. In fact, I strongly object to shutting down them.

First of all, Internet bars provide those who can't afford a computer with a chance of getting access to the Internet. Nowadays China is still a developing country, where a large number of people cannot afford computers, let alone access to the Internet in the home. Therefore, the operation of Internet bars makes their dream of surfing on the Internet come true.

Secondly, these days, minors are strictly prohibited from entering any Internet bars. It is China's law to prevent minors from using the Internet at Internet bars. Once a boss of an Internet bar does not comply with this law, he or she will have trouble continuing to make business.

Thirdly, most Internet bars of today are comfortable and convenient. In the process of attracting customers many Internet bar bosses try their best to provide their customers with meals and drinks. Hence, bar users can enjoy playing games and tasting some delicious food at an internet bar.

Of course, some problems do occur. One of them is that some bosses still allow some minors to enter their bars without checking their ID carefully.

In conclusion, the government cannot shut down all the Internet bars for just some minor problems. (211 words)

Grammar warehouse: the use of Dear Sir,

Nowadays, many good city amenities have released city dwellers from many their inconveniences. And urban people are happy to put these amenities to use. However, according to some people, nowadays, city life, unhealthy, noisy, devoid of nature and distinct seasons, makes some city dwellers long to return to the countryside. So, in my opinion, beautifying our living environment has made colossal demands on our senses of social responsibility, on our attitude towards the development of our cities as well as on your work as a mayor. Furthermore, whether our city will be ideal inhabitable places for our offspring or not depends on a considerable extent on your work of today. That, in turn, you must work so hard. Date: April 3, 2013 Story title: singing red songs Story number: 19

In order to make foreigners learn something about China’s countryside. I took a foreigner colleague of mine to pay a visit to/visit village in Chongqing last year. With the village located in the remote mountains, it took us two days to get there. Arriving at the village, we noticed all the villagers, male and female, young and old, singing a song and dancing a dance. Seeing this situation, my colleague got so surprised, asking me whether we entered on African jungle by mistake. I told him that they were singing red songs and dancing red dance to show their loyalty to Chinese leaders. On hearing my explanation, my colleague couldn’t help bursting at laughing. (No sooner had my friend heard my explanation than he couldn’t help bursting out laughing.) Disturbed by the loud laughter, the villagers got extremely irate. Thy stopped singing with their eye fixed on my colleague. Then, they began to scold him. Not only did they scold him, but they also got close to beating him. I told them immediately that his laughing mean his appreciating their dancing. All of a sudden, all the villagers began to smile and chant revolutionary slogans “learn from the foreigner”.

Story title: buying lottery ticket Story number: 20

Grammar warehouse: 名词从句 Dear Sir,

It has been shown/said/reported that nowadays so many people buy lottery tickets every week. It is worth pointing out that most lottery ticket buyers are poor. Many poor people make it clear that the poorer they are, the more often they will buy lotteries. It seems to me that media should be liable for this phenomenon. The reason is that your journalists usually report who has won a special prize and how much money a winner has earned. Hence, many poor people take it for granted that they will be able to become billionaires overnight. The realization that they might become billionaires overnight causes so many people to buy more and more lottery tickets. However, the miserable fact is that the more often they buy lotteries, the poorer they will be.

I am writing to you in order to the hope that you will reveal (disclose) something terrible about this game. (Writing to you in the idea that you will reveal more sorrowful stories about lotteries.) If you do so, there is no doubt that your newspaper will be popular with many more lottery ticket players. If not, there is no way that the harmonious society of Chengdu will come true. I’m pleased that you will accept my suggestion. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Grammar warehouse: 名词从句2 Dear Sir,

There has been growing recognition that pet breading has led up to some social problems here in Chengdu. According to many people, they often feel scared with the thought that they will be liable to be ill with rabies. It was reported that some people died of rabies in Chengdu last year. It is worth pointing out that these victims were either children or old people. Doctors make it clear that the death rate for rabies is 100 percent. If a person suffers from this kind of disease, there is no doubt that he or she will have to die. However, the thought that rabies is that horrible has never entered the heads of many Chengdu residents. Also, many residents take it for granted that only peasants in the countryside are liable to suffer from rabies rather than city dwellers. I am writing to you in the hope that you will appeal residents to take good care of their own pet dogs and cats. (Writing this letter is the idea that appeals residents to take good care of their own pet dogs and cats.) Frankly speaking, there is no way that Chengdu will be nominated as a civilized hygienic city next year without this problem being dealt with successfully. I am sure that you will accept my suggestion.

Story title: 远亲不如近邻 Story number: 22

Grammar warehouse: 名词从句3

It is funny phenomenon that many people nowadays are willing to stay in close touch with many faraway friends through the Internet, but they are unwilling to get to know their next-door neighbours. Moreover, their nearby neighbours are the last people they would like to talk to, let alone lend them a hand. When they happen to meet their neighbours in front of their doors, they are inclined to smile at them instead of greeting them enthusiastically. It has been said that this is the best way to get along really well with neighbours, especially next-door neighbours. However, an old saying says, “A distant relative is not as good help as a near neighbour.” I quite agree with this view. In fact, the interest of getting on with neighbours is not so much in the fact that good neighbourhood is beneficial to the creation of harmonious society, but in the fact that we are able to create a colourful living atmosphere.

Story title: to boss a letter 2 Story number: 23

Grammar warehouse: adjectival clauses (定语从句) Dear Boss,

Time and tide wait for no man. Nine weeks has passed since I entered this centre. Now I am sitting in the classroom, writing a second letter to you. I am willing to report everything that has interested me. The one thing that interests me most is that so far I have set up nine language warehouses. And I am able to put what I have learnt to correct uses in my writing. The second thing that is worth mentioning here is that I have learnt something also from our teachers apart from English. For example, Mrs. Qi and Zhao, who are our listening teachers, are always very strict with us. Mr. Zhang, who teaches us writing, always encourages us to make up some interesting stories by using the fixed usages (which) we have studied before. Douglas, whom Chinese name is Chen Chunfa and who teaches us reading, is very humorous and interesting. I especially like the way in which he teaches us English reading. Really, there is not a single student in Going-abroad class 4 but agree with the idea that he is an excellent teacher. This is the reason why I would like to say something more about him.

All in all, our teachers are popular with us trainees, many of whom are famous university professors in Kunming. I am sure that by the time when I leave the centre I will have learnt more and more. By the way, let’s find a place some day where we can play mahjong and meanwhile I can share my stories with you.

Grammar warehouse: adjectival clauses (定语从句)

According to some people, Chengdu is no longer a city which a tourist visits and is unwilling to leave. Frankly speaking, I quite disagree with this view, and instead I like Chengdu much more. There are several reasons why I like it.

For one thing, Chengdu’s climate is nice. In an attempt to illustrate my view, let us use an example Chengdu’s winter, when it is not very cold and the sun always shines.

And for another, there are a variety of delicious foods in Chengdu. For example, Doufu, whose English translation is bean curd, is very famous. It is cooked with a lot of wild peppers, which taste “Ma” in Chinese. Sichuan dishes are mainly characteristic of “Ma”, which means “cool” in English. It is said that many strangers can not stand “Ma” at first, but by and by they will get used to it. In fact, “Ma” is popular with tourists, many of whom are foreigners here in Chengdu.

Finally, as far Chengdu’s life style, the Chengdu people lead a happy-go-lucky life. If a stranger comes here, he will be most likely impressed by the way in which the Chengdu people lead a life. There are reasons why many tourists visit Chengdu and are unwilling to leave. (200 words)

Date: April 28 Story title: cell phone Story number: 26 Grammar warehouse:

I quite disagree with this idea. In fact, there has been growing recognition that a cell phone plays an extremely important role in our daily lives and work these days.

First, it helps people to stay in close touch with one another. For example, ….

Secondly, apart from this (a cell phone making people stay in close touch with each other), access to a cell phone can greatly increase a man’s chance of making a deal with others. Take somebody/something for instance….

Thirdly, it has been said that a cell phone is also a good sort of gift. Hence, these days many boys would like to present their girls friends with cell phones instead of rose flowers on Valentine’s Days. In fact, if a boy cannot have wise access to a cell phone, he will be likely to start on the road to failure in the process of dating his girl friend, and vise versa.

In conclusion, going access to a cell phone has become an essential part in people’s daily lives; hence, we cannot deal with a cell phone related problem by simply throwing a cell phone away. (192 words)

Story title: a letter to president Iran Story number: 27

Grammar warehouse: subjunctive mood 1 To the president of Iran Dear Sir,

Referring to the present Iranian nuclear crisis, it seems to many people that you act as though/if you were crazy. However, I do not agree with them. My suggestion is that you (should) not yield to the US imperialist. The insistence of your country that peaceful access to nuclear energy be your right is reasonable. In fact, a country should be allowed to develop its own nuclear program on condition that it (should) not develop weapons of mass destruction. Hence, I consider it necessary that your country continue to enrich uranium for a peaceful purpose.

On the other hand, your country should comply with the UN related resolution for fear that it be confronted with even tougher sanction from the UN. To be fair, I would rather that you cooperated with the UN than that you fought against. Also, if I were you, I would widely trumpet the idea concerning the nuclear program in the world. Really, it is high time that you strengthened this kind of propaganda work! (It is high time that you made propaganda for you ideas concerning the nuclear program.) By the way, it seems to me that Obama’s real purpose of suppressing you is to control your country’s petroleum. Finally, it only you would be heroic!

Referring to smoking, my proposal is that a smoker (should) give up smoking as soon as possible. However, whenever I mention this kind of suggestion in the presence of Peter, a foreign teacher at this center, he often stares at me as if I came from Mars. Instead of accepting my proposal that he (should) reduce the number of cigarettes, he even trumpets some advantages of smoking. According to him, he considers it necessary that he smoke every day. Interestingly enough, he even urges that I learn to smoke. Nonetheless, he is also afraid of suffering from lung cancer, hence, he often uses a pipe for fear that he (should) inhale more Nicotine. I would rather that he gave up smoking than that he tried to find some excuses for his smoking habit. Really, it is high time that he gave up smoking! If I were the president of the country, I would prohibit tabacco corporations from producing any kinds of cigarettes in this country. Do you second the motion that my administration should pass the prohibition bill tomorrow morning? If only you could support me!

Story title: drunken driving Story number: 30

Grammar warehouse: inverted construction 1 Dear Sir or Madam,

Nowhere in the world are there more traffic accidents caused by drunken driving to me than in china. Interestingly enough, when you ask a driver whether he or she will drive after drinking liquor, more often than not, his or her reply will be like this: “In no way shall I do.” In reality, however, no sooner had many drivers raised wine glasses than they forgot the traffic law completely. And only at the moment when they knocked down somebody could they realize that they made a big error. Not until they were put in jail could they understand the importance of complying with the traffic law. As a result, many drunken drivers had no alternative but to spend many days or years in jail. Among them were a number of the officials in government departments.

No doubt, not only were victims’ families subjected to tortures, but drunken motorists’ families also suffered a lot. Writing this letter is the idea that you should appeal all motorists to comply with the traffic law strictly. Really, under no circumstances should they drive after drinking liquor. Furthermore, only when/if drivers comply with the traffic law strictly, can we avoid the traffic accidents caused by drunken driving.

Grammar warehouse: inverted construction 2 Dear Mr. Kim,

Only when I watched the TV news about your father’s death could I believe that he had passed away. Not only did I feel heartbroken, but I also felt regretful for his early death. Please accept my condolences on your father’s death.

Your father’s death refreshes my memory of his great historic feats. Many a time two years ago did he pay a visit to China and introduce you to some Chinese leaders. Among them were Chairman Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.

Referring to North Korea’s internal affairs, scarcely had a problem occurred somewhere in North Korea when your father appeared there at once and tried to solve it immediately. For example, no sooner had your father learnt the North Korean people feel like eating fish than he ordered the departments concerned to distribute fish among people. As for international affairs, in no way did your father surrender to the U.S. imperialist. Furthermore, under no circumstances was he willing to give up his unclear program.

According to him, should the U.S. imperialist attack North Korea, he would use unclear weapons to fight against it until the last minute. How brave he was! Now you are in office as the North Korean highest leader. Many officials have made it clear that they support you. No doubt, only under you wise leadership will North Korea have a bright future.

Hardly do I write letters of complaints, but this time I find it irritating in the extreme to register a complaint about one of your employees, Lisa.

When I was in your bookstore yesterday, Miss Lisa persisted in speaking to me very slowly in simple English, only using one-syllable words and enunciating in an exaggerated fashion. Although I speak English with a Chinese accent, my English is correct enough to have allowed me to pass the test given by China’s Scholarship Council, and I feel her behavior was inappropriate. To be fair, it was beyond my expectation that the downstairs barbecue has been interfering with your normal life. Hence, first of all, I should apologize to you for this smoke and smell.

Really, had I been aware that the illness of some students stemmed from the downstairs barbecue, I would not have barbecue food outside. I have already decided not to barbecue outside the restaurant for fear that many a student be subjected to the torture of the smoke and smell any more. I must continue to study hard here in exactly the same way as I did at the university 5 years age and do not let down your wish. Finally, please give my regards to your parents. (121 words)

Story title: a letter of thank 1 Story number: 48 Dear Mr. Li Na,

Writing this letter is the idea that I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for presenting us tennis fans with a wonderful and thrilling performances at the finally of 2012 French Open, in which you beat the Italian tennis players and won Grant Slam.

The moment (as soon as) I had seen our national flag raised and heard our national anthem played, I was moved to tears. I was proud of you. Really, it had never occurred to me that you even won the last round with a score of 7:1. Frankly speaking, the interest of your victory is not so much in the fact that you have became the first Asian woman who won Grand Slam at the French Open in the history, but in the fact that your success will encourage more young Chinese to like and play tennis.

Again, I should thank you for the wonderful match. And I am looking forward to seeing you win more championships in the future. Finally, pleas give my regards to you husband. Yours truly Xiao Hua

Story title: a letter of thank 2 Story number: 49 Dear Liu Xiang,

Congratulations on your winning of a gold medal in the 110 hurdle race during the Athena Olympic Games.

Seeing you surpass all other runners during the race, I felt extremely excited. Really, only when they saw the result on the screen could many spectators believe their eyes. No sooner had spectators hard you create a new record of the 110 hurdle race than they all rose to cheer you. If only I had been in Athena! Your success proves that we Chinese can run faster than Western runners. The realization of many young people that we Chinese can be trained to become the best in the track and field cause them to be actively involved in the training in the field. I am sure that watching the 110 hurdle race will come into fashion in China soon.

My best wishes to you for a further success. I hope that you will win another gold medal in Brazil, where the 2016 Olympic Games will be hold in three years. Yours truly Xiao Hua
