Part Ⅱ. Reading Comprehension (40 points) Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice, and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

Passage One

Some pessimistic experts feel that the automobile is bound to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all autos will be abandoned and allowed to rust. Other authorities, however, think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable future.

The motorcar will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more economical, and should not be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types. Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic congestion (拥挤). One proposed solution to this problem is the automated highway system.

When the auto enters the highway system, a retractable (可伸缩的) arm will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail, which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically. Once attached to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car’s movements.

The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system. The computer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer (蜂鸣器) that will warn him of his coming exit. It is estimated that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.

41. One significant improvement in the future car will probably be _______.

A. its power source B. its driving system C. its monitoring system D. its seating capacity 42. What is the author’s main concern?

A. How to render automobiles pollution free. B. How to make smaller and safer automobiles. C. How to solve the problem of traffic jams. D. How to develop an automated subway system. 43. What provides autos with electric power in an automated highway system?

A. A rail. B. An engine. C. A retractable arm. D. A computer controller. 44. In an automated highway system, all the driver needs to do is to _______. A. keep in the right lane B. wait to arrive at his destination

C. keep in constant touch with the computer center D. inform the system of his destination by phone 45. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of autos?

A. Enthusiastic. B. Pessimistic. C. Optimistic. D. Cautious.

Passage Two

Riding bicycles through London’s busy streets is one of the quickest ways to get about. The average

speed of the capital’s traffic is only about 11 mph. Most bicycle-riders can beat that.

More than 1 million people use bicycles as their main means of getting to work, and the number of bicycles in Britain has increased from 7 million in 1977 to more than 13 million now. Yet bicycle-riders are not always treated very friendly. Quite often taxi drivers take a person who rides on a bike as a fellow who makes them lose one more passenger.

Riding bicycles is cheaper and healthier than driving. Heart experts group cycling with swimming and walking as the best ways to keep the heart healthy-certainly better than jogging. But it is not safe.

For every mile travelled, bicycle-riders are almost 12 times more likely to be killed than drivers. About 280 bicycle-riders were killed in 1987 and nearly 26000 were injured, 90℅ of them were in areas with many buildings. Lives could be saved if more bicycle-riders wore helmets, which are still not forced.

B. If bicycle-riders wore helmets at any time, they would less likely be killed. C. Unless everybody wore helmets, there would be no accidents.

D. If bicycle-riders wore helmets, they would not be killed at any time. 50. The last sentence of the passage implies that in the future ____. A. Bicycle-riders will probably be forbidden in busy streets.

B. It will be against the law if people don’t wear helmets when they go out. C. People will be forced to wear helmets when they are on a bike.

D. More and more people should ride bicycle since cycling is good for health.

Passage Three

Attention to details is something everyone can and should do especially in a tight market. Bob Crossley, a human resources expert notices this in the job applications that come across his desk everyday. “It’s amazing how many candidates eliminate themselves. ” he says. Resume arrive with stains. Some candidates don’t bother to spell the company’s name correctly. “Once I see a mistake, eliminate the candidate, ” Crossley concludes. “If they cannot take care of these details, why should we trust them with a job? ”

Can we pay too much to details? Absolutely. Perfectionists struggle over little things at the cost of something larger they work toward. “To keep from losing the forest for the trees, ” says Charles Garfield, associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco, “we must constantly ask ourselves how the details we’re working on fit into the larger picture. If they don’t, we should drop

4

them and move to something else. ”

Garfield compares this process to his work as a computer scientist at NASA. “The Apollo Ⅱmoon launch was slightly off course 90 percent of the time, ” says Garfield. “ But a successful landing was still likely because we knew the exact coordinates of our goal. This allowed us to make adjustments as necessary. ” Knowing where we want to go helps us judge the importance of every task we undertake.

Too often we believe what accounts to other’s success is some special secret or a lucky break. But rarely is success so mysterious. Again andagain, we see that by doing little things within our grasp well, large rewards follow.

51. According to the passage, some job applicants were rejected ___. A. because of their carelessness as shown in their failure to present a clean copy of a resume B. because of their inadequate education as shown in their poor spelling in writing a resume C. because they failed to give a detailed description of their background in their application D. because they eliminated their names from the applications’ list themselves 52. B. know how to adjust their goals according to the circumstances

C. pay too much attention to details only to lose their major objectives D. are capable of achieving perfect results in whatever they do

53. Which of the following is the author’s advice to the reader?

A. Although too much attention to details may be costly, they should not be overlooked. B. Don’t forget details when drawing pictures.

C. Be aware of the importance of a task before undertaking it D. Careless applications are not to be trusted.
