“Everyone finds a partner!” said my coach. We were about to start the 8th grade weight training. The coach asked us to do this to make the new kids feel welcome. When the 8th graders walked in, I saw the nervous expressions on their faces. When I saw them, I could remember myself the year before when I was doing the same thing. I remember coming to Granger High School for the 8th grade lifting. I felt nervous when I came in. I was afraid to meet the coach. I didn’t feel welcome because everyone was bigger than I. I didn’t want to make a mistake and get laughed at in front of all the people.

The second time was a lot better. I wasn’t afraid to walk into the room. I thought to myself, if that kid could do it, then I could do it too. I went to my partner who I had last time and I felt a little bit more confident.

Though I tried not to make mistakes, it happened. I felt sad. Then one of the players said “Good job, you are getting better now.” Hearing this, I felt not that ashamed of myself.

When I came back to reality, I realized the kid in front of me was just like me. When he was sad because of his mistakes, I would tell him “Good job, you are getting better”. Once I encouraged them, they started to feel better like me. I also felt good about myself for being able to help them feel more confident. I could hear them praising one to another. I could see that they weren’t getting down on themselves. ()30. Why did the coach ask us to find a partner? A. Because the coach loved the new kids better.

An invention can be valued because it solves a problem or fills a need. And sometimes an invention can serve a purpose for which it wasn’t planned. A toy that millions of people enjoy playing with every day is invented in this way.

James Wright was an engineer working in the General Electric laboratories in the 1940s. There wasn’t enough natural rubber (橡胶) in the USA at that time, so the US government asked GE and other companies to develop artificial (人工的) rubber. One day at work, Wright produced an interesting product. The material jumped higher than rubber and had other interesting features. But the government wasn’t interested in Wright’s invention. Artificial rubber that was used was already being made in other laboratories. Although Wright’s product had interesting features, nobody could find it useful.

Perhaps the product would have been just a local wonder if it hadn’t been because of a man named Peter Hodgson. Peter Hodgson had experience in advertising. He learned about the product and had an idea. He knew that marketing and advertising were very important in making a product popular.

Hodgson bought the rights (版权) to make the product, which he named Silly Putty. He sold it in a few stores and then began to advertise it nationwide. Then Silly Putty was mentioned in the New Yorker magazine. In three days, Hodgson received 250,000 orders for Silly Putty. This lab experiment had become a popular toy. Hodgson put the putty in plastic eggs, and it is still sold that way. Silly Putty was one of the best-selling toys of the 1950s, and it remains very popular with children today. ()34. When did James Wright invent the putty? A. When he was making artificial rubber. B. When he was meeting an engineer. C. When he was cooking at home.

D. When he was doing some advertisements. ()35. What can we know about Silly Putty? A. It is used today by more adults than children.

B. Making a special ball is the most valuable of its uses.

C. Peter Hodgson made it popular through advertisements. D. It has gotten a lot of new uses over the years.

()36. What can we know about Peter Hodgson according to the passage? A. He bought several toys from different companies.

B. He saw the possibilities for something that others didn’t. C. He searched for new inventions by reading magazines.

D. He believed that mistakes often led to important discoveries. ()37. Why did the writer write this passage?

A. To encourage us to think of clever uses for a product. B. To explain how to develop a new invention.

C. To describe some creative ways of selling a new product. D. To tell us about an interesting invention.

A company in San Francisco has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes. Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s, however, turns this plastic waste into shoes.

Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press it through a machine that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined, or woven (编织) together. This is done by a 3D-weaving machine.

Rothy’s shoes are made from recycled plastic water bottles. The fibers are woven together into a fabric (布料). The outer sole (鞋底) on the bottom is made from environmentally friendly rubber. The fabric and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to (固定在) the shoe’s outer sole. This outer sole is also made from a kind of no-carbon rubber.

Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They cost either $125 or $145 per pair, depending on the design.

Martin says there is plenty of material to fill that demand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have an endless supply of material,” he says. When the shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled materials to make other products. For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.

()38. What has Rothy’s done according to the passage? A. Changed plastic waste to useful shoes. B. Drawn people’s attention to plastic waste.

C. Found a kind of no-carbon rubber to make shoes.

D. Built the first environmentally friendly shoe company. ()39. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The founders of Rothy’s.

B. The purpose of making Rothy’s shoes.

C. The materials used to make Rothy’s shoes. D. The production process of Rothy’s shoes. ()40. What can we know about Rothy’s shoes? A. They don’t cost more than $ 100. B. They can be worn for a long time. C. They don’t pollute the environment.

D. They are more comfortable than ordinary shoes. ()41. Where can we probably read the passage? A. In a storybook. B. In a travel guide. C. In a newspaper.

People get angry for all kinds of reasons, from the trivial (琐碎的) ones to the really serious ones. But, mostly, anger happens for trivial reasons. That’s why the American Psychological Association has a part of its website which talks about anger management. Interestingly, it reads very much like one of the oldest articles on the subject, On Anger, written by the Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca back in the first century CE.

Seneca thought that anger is a short-time madness. Other bad habits affect (影响) our judgment, while anger affects our minds. Other bad habits come in small attacks and grow unnoticed, but men’s minds fall suddenly into anger. Its intensity (强度) is in no way controlled, so it rises to the greatest heights from the most trivial beginnings. Then we may make unwise decisions.

The perfect modem environment for anger management is the Internet. If you write, read, or comment on a blog, you know what I mean. When someone disagreed about my opinion, I was so angry. But now instead of quarreling with them, I focus my energy on answering sincere questions from others, doing my best to make them have useful conversations. Through communication, we understand each other better. Then I feel less angry at them.

Now, some people say that anger is the right response to certain environment. It can be a motivating (促进的) force for action if it is moderate (适度的). But Seneca thinks there is no such thing in the universe. As for motivation, what the Stoic take is that we are moved to action by positive emotions. I agree with him.

Marcus, another philosopher thought that if people are doing wrong, what you need to do instead is “teach them then, and show them without being angry.” That is exactly the useful way.

()42. What can be learned from Paragraph 1?

A. Ancient people cared little about anger management.

B. Americans show the greatest interest in anger management. C. Seneca was the first person to talk about anger management. D. Unimportant things often result in the feeling of anger. ()43. According to Seneca, _________.

A. anger intensity can be controlled anyway B. anger can also bring people some happiness

C. being angry with others shows one’s poor communicating skills D. actions based on anger may cause regrettable results ()44. What’s the writer’s opinion about anger management? A. Anger is acceptable if it is moderate. B. It’s very easy to control anger.

C. Anger is necessary to make people act.

D. Practical conversations are good ways to deal with anger. ()45. What is the passage mainly about? A. The method of studying anger. B. The method of dealing with anger. C. The discussion about anger intensity. D. The damage that anger usually does.
