13、As a little boy, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather's farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stonewalls, the house and farm provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.

I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old. Since my first visit to the farm, I'd wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stonewalls surrounding the farm. My parents would never agree. The walls were old; some stones were missing, others loose and falling into pieces. Still, my wish to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally, one spring afternoon, I summoned (鼓起) all my courage and entered the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.

\"I, uh, I want to climb the stonewalls,\" I said hesitantly. Everyone looked up. \"Can I climb the stone walls?\" Immediately a chorus went up from the women in the room. \"Heavens, no!\" they cried, \"You'll hurt yourself!\" I wasn't too disappointed; the response was just as I'd expected. But before I could leave the room, I was stopped by my grandfather's loud voice. \"Now hold on just a minute,\" I heard him say, \"Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has

to learn to do things for himself.'

\"Go,\" he said to me, \"and come and see me when you get back. ' For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventure. I'll never forget what he said. \"Fred,\" he said, smiling widely, \"you made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember: there's only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you as you are.\" Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers'

Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit.

\"There's only one person in this whole world like you,\" the kids can count on hearing my say, \"and people can like you as you are.\"

15、Pictures That Don’t Last

“YEARS ago when I was at the Grand Canyon, I remember someone coming up to the canyon’s edge, taking a shot with their camera and then walking away, like ‘got it – done’, barely even glancing at the magnificent (壮观的) scene sprawling (展开) in front of them,” Linda Henkel, a scientist at Fairfield University, US told Live Science. Henkel was surprised by how obsessed (着迷的) people are with taking pictures these days – before dinner, during friends’ birthday parties, on museum tours and so on. You know people just like that, don’t you?

They keep taking pictures because they think that it helps record the moment, but as Henkel’s latest study has just

found out, this obsession may prevent their brains from remembering what actually happened, reported The Guardian. In her study, Henkel led a group of college students around a museum and asked them to simply observe 15 objects and to photograph 15 others. The next day the students’ memory of the tour was tested, and the results showed that they were less accurate in recognizing the objects and they remembered fewer details about them if they photographed them. “When people rely on technology to remember for them – counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully themselves, it can have a negative effect on how well they remember their experiences,” Henkel explained.

But there is also an exception: if students zoomed (缩放) in to photograph part of an object, their memory actually improved, and those who focused the lens (镜头) on a specific area could even recall parts that weren’t in the frame. So basically, this study is saying that constantly taking pictures can harm your memory. But shouldn’t reviewing pictures we have taken help wake up our memories? This is true, but only if we spend enough time doing it.

“In order to remember, we have to access(接近)and interact with the photos, rather than justamassingthem,” Henkel told The Telegraph. However, previous research has shown that most people never take the time to look over their digital pictures simply because there are too many of them and they aren’t usually very organized on their computers. 1.The author mentioned Henkel’s trip to the Grand Canyon at the beginning to ______. A.complain about some tourists’ bad habits B.give suggestions on how to enjoy one’s tour C.describe the great view of the Grand Canyon D.point out people’s obsession with taking pictures

2.Which of the following statements about Henkel’s study is TRUE? A.Reviewing pictures always helps people bring back memories.

B.Taking pictures in a museum tour helps students recognize objects better.

C.Pictures that focus on the details of objects are likely to improve people’s memories. D.People should spend more time studying real objects than taking pictures of them. 3.The underlined word “amassing” in the last paragraph probably means ______. A.displaying C.introducing

4.What is the article mainly about? A.Some skills to learn for taking pictures.

B.People’s obsession with taking pictures and its influence. C.How pictures remind us of our past.

Whatever life threw at us each year, our family had one tradition at Christmas: our dog Pepper opened our presents for us.

Last year, everyone made it home for a Christmas get-together. However, it couldn't feel perfect because Pepper's health was becoming worse. Her life had already been longer than we expected—she was fourteen—and yet her mind was still sharp. Her love for life made us feel better. But her body could not keep up with her mind.

Probably it was Pepper's last Christmas, so we decided to make sure she would enjoy it. On Christmas Eve, we each prepared presents for her.

Soon, Pepper selected her first Christmas gift. She turned the present, just as she was a young dog once more. She pulled the paper off the dog treat before she chewed it slowly. Our family was so happy.

Pepper saw the other three presents, and then turned to Mom as if asking, \"May I open another?\" \"Go ahead, girl!\" Mom encouraged.

For the next few minutes, Pepper opened each of her Christmas presents. While she did, she reminded us of the joy of being together. Our family felt as a whole—not because we were in the same room or city, but because our love brought us together.

Pepper passed away after Christmas. Her peaceful passing made us tearful. Her passing was also a celebration of life, because she gave my family so much love and laughter.

I still treasure (珍惜) Pepper’s final Christmas gift. She taught me that no matter where we each spend the holidays, the smallest act of sincere giving can unite our family through our love. For me, that knowledge is the longest-lasting gift of all.

1.The dog Pepper usually _________ at Christmas. A.chewed the dog treat slowly B.chose the presents for herself

C.played with the author's family happily D.opened the presents for the author's family

A.he didn't get a Christmas gift B.Pepper was in poor health C.Pepper died on Christmas Eve D.he didn't feel the joy of being together

3.The dog Pepper got _________ Christmas gifts last year. A.two B.three C.four D.five

4.The underlined phrase \"the longest-lasting gift\" in the last paragraph refers to \"_________\". A.the friendship with the dog

B.the holiday the author spent with family C.the Christmas present for the dog

D.the life lesson the author learned from Pepper 5.The best title for the passage can be \"_________\". A.The Power of Love B.Celebrating Christmas

C.The Importance of Helping Others D.Enjoying the Happiness of Making Friends

Hello, I'm Zheng Yishi from Shanghai. I'm 15 years old. I study at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cleveland, Ohio, US. I Like reading, traveling and listening to music. I'm glad to share my experience with you.

Have you ever wondered what PE classes are like in other countries? In China, PE tests are required to graduate from both middle school and high school. To get good grades on the PE tests, Chinese students will need to practice running as well as doing sit-ups and pull-ups. However, this is not the way that PE classes work in US high schools.

In my high school, we are required to take two terms of PE to graduate. We play real sports during PE classes, such as basketball and volleyball. There are also some other typical American sports that we often play, such as kickball and dodgeball(躲避球).

I didn't know the rules of kickball and dodgeball when I first came to the US. The teacher allowed me to sit on the sidelines and watch how other students played it in order to let me find out the rules.

We also learn some useful life skills in PE. Last year, I learned how to do CPR(心肺复苏), which is a life-saving skill. We were also taught how to provide first aid to someone who is choking(窒息).These skills are a large part of the final grade for the PE class in my high school. Self-defense(自卫)is taught in PE class as well. This includes some tae kwon do(跆拳道)and karate(空手道) skills, as well as Chinese kung fu. It is practical. I prefer PE classes in the US to the ones in China. I think they are more fun and useful. What do you think?

1.The writer learned the rules of kickball and dodgeball through · A.a teacher's instruction C.playing the sport herself

B.watching others play D.watching online videos

2.Which of these things did the writer NOT learn about in PE classes at Welsh Jesuit High School? A.How to play sports. C.Self-defense skills.

3.The story is written to . A.introduce the writer's favorite sports B.explain what US PE classes are like C.show why US students don't like PE classes D.suggest that China should change its PE classes

18、Are there some days when you don’t want to take a bath? An invention called DryBath can solve your problem---you can get clean by using it without taking a bath!

A few years ago, Ludwick Marishane and his friend enjoyed a day at the beach. At the end of the day Ludwick’s friend was so tired that he didn’t want to take a bath. Then an idea came into Ludwick’s mind---why not invent something to help people get clean without taking a bath? Ludwick ran home, did some research (on his mobile phone because he didn’t have a computer) and over time invented DryBath.

During his research, Ludwick also learned that over 2 billion people in the world live without improved sanitation (卫生设施). That’s about one third of the world’s population. Ludwick wants to help not only his “lazy” friend, but also people who can’t easily get clean. Staying clean can help people keep in good health.

Some hotels are also interested in DryBath. It can save a lot of water and help save the environment, too.
