By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. listen to a talk about time capsule;

2. read an introduction to the time capsule at the 1939 world’s fair; 3. learn some core words.

T: Class begins, boys and girls! Good morning/afternoon! Step 1 Listening AP50 1. Guess what to listen to.

T: It’s wise for you to guess what will be listened to. You can read through the questions and other given materials to guess the topic of conversation and other useful information. Now go through the materials at page 50 and find out the topic.

T: Right. From the repeated key words “time capsule”, we know that the topic is “time capsule”. There must be a “letter to the future” and other important things put in the capsule. Some important people like Steven Jobs must be involved in the listening materials.

2. Listen for true-false tests

T: Please go through the requirements and listen carefully before finishing A1.

Contents: a wide variety of objects, like a tooth brush, a fountain pen, microfilm rolls and a message written by Albert Einstein.

2. Why do you think Einstein wrote the message with mixed feelings?

2) Pride: America had achieved many great things unimaginable to people in the past. Worry: Serious social problems were developing in his time.

4. Understanding the complex sentence

He mentioned a few social problems before concluding that he believed future generations would

read his message with “a feeling of proud and justified superiority”. (last sentence in the last paragraph)

T: I’d like someone to analyze the sentence components.

Answer: The main part of the sentence is “He mentioned…problems...”. The part “before concluding that…” is a prepositional phrase as adverbial. The conjunction “that” leads object clause. In the object clause, “he believed…” is a secondary main part, with “future generations would read his message” as object clause. The prepositional phrase “with ‘a feeling of proud and justified superiority’” is attribute, modifying the noun “message”.
