Will it matter if you don't take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those
tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experi¬ ment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.
Opposite to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.
36. During the test, those who were tested were given ________. A. no breakfast at all B. very rich breakfast C. little food for breakfast
D. different breakfast or none
37. The results of the test show that ________. A. breakfast has great effect on work and studies B. breakfast has little to do with a person s work C. a person will work better if he has a simple breakfast D. those working with brains should have much for breakfast
38. The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don't eat breakfast, you will _________. A. lose weight B. not lose weight C. be healthier D. gain a lot of weight 39. Which of the following is not true according to the passage? A. Poor breakfasts affect those who work with brains. B. Morning diet may cause one to get fatter.
C. Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight losing. D. Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight.
40. According to the passage, if a student does not eat breakfast, ___________. A. he will fall ill B. he will fail to listen to his teacher C. he will not make progress in his study
D. his mind will work more slowly

Social customs and ways of behaving change. Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago,it was considered impolite behavior for a man to smoke on the s treet. No man who thought of himself a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room.
Customs also have been changing from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country?Or doesn’t it matter? What about table manners?Should you use both hands when you are eating?Should you leave one on your lap,or on the table?
The Americans and the British not only speak the same language, but also share a number of social c ustoms. For example, both American and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the f irst time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will m ost Americans. Promptness is important both in England and America. That is,if a dinner invitation is for 7 o’ clock, the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay.
The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable—especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a formal dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The o ther guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same w ay. It would have been bad manners to make his guests feel foolish or uncomfortable.
41.If one has accepted a dinner invitation, what should he do if he is to be late for the dinner? A.He should find an excuse. B.He should ask for excuse. C.He should say “Sorry”.
D.He should telephone to explain his being late.
42.It would have been bad manners to make his guests feel foolish or uncomfortable. Here “bad manners”
means ________. A.ugly B.dishonest C.impolite D.shameful 43.Which of the following do you think is the best title for this passage? A.Social Customs and Behaviors B.Social Life
C.American and British Customs D.Promptness Is Important
44.According to the text, the best host ________. A.tries his best to make his guests feel comfortable B.makes his guests feel excited
C.tries to avoid being naughty to his guests D.tries to avoid being foolish
45. The underlined the word ” Promptness ” in the third paragraph probably means A. act with heart
B. act with present D. act without word
C. act without being late

During the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties,a nd would be likely to have seven or eight children,of whom four or five lived till they were five y ears old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and w ould expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her t o get paid work. A right pair of exercise shoes can do a lot to prevent discomfort and injuries, personal trainers say. Here are some shopping tips:
51 Depending on your workout, shoes designed for walking, running, tennis, cross-training or another specialty will provide the best support for your feet.
Shop when you normally exercise. Feet actually get bigger throughout the day, sometimes turning out big as much as a half-size by nighttime.
52
Try them on. Never take a pair of exercise shoes based only on the size of footwear you normally buy. Bring the type of socks you’d wear to work out and go for a walk through the store.
53
You should be able to spread your toes out comfortable. Make sure there’s about a half-inch of space between them and the front of the shoe. The back should fit warmly and comfortably against your heel and not move up and down. If your feet are in different sizes, buy based on the larger one.
Talk to an expert.
Shoe salesmen and personal trainers can study your way of walking or running and the shape of your feet.
54 55
Many trainers advise changing footwear every three to five months. If possible, check it regularly in order to keep it in good condition.
One tip: If you have to tie your shoes very tightly to feel a good amount of support, they may be ready to go. A. Think about how much you can afford to buy the workout shoes. B. Consider your type of exercise. C. Focus on fit.
D. So don’t buy shoes in the morning if you often work out in the evening. E. Pay more attention to new style shoes. F. Replace worn shoes regularly.
G. Usually they can advise the best shoes to guard against injuries.

书面表达【参考范文】(共 15 分) Dear Jack,
I am so happy to hear from you. A very good way to improve writing is to read other people’s articles. If you read plenty of good Chinese articles, you will learn how skillful writers use Chinese to express themselves, and present information in an excellent way. Thus you can improve your ability to use the language. Like other skills, you should improve your writing by practicing it. Keeping a diary is a good idea.
It is natural that beginners make mistakes while writing. But don’t worry. Finding out why you made the mistakes will help you avoid future mistakes and enable you to write better.
With best wishes,
