If you think English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the earlier people learn a second language, the greater the effect is. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London(UCL), took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of“early bilinguals(通两种语言的人)”, who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is

- 2 -

changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said, “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the earlier they started to learn, the better.“Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists. 21. What does the underlined part “grey matter”(in paragraph 2) refer to? A.Grey hair. B.Material of the brain. C.Intelligence. D.Difficult situations. 22. The experience of learning a second language can . A.change one’s brain completely B.improve one’s maths skills C.make one smarter than others D.increase the ability to learn

23. We can learn from the passage that . A.the researchers from UCL did another study in Italy

B.a similar study was done on native Italian speakers who learn English as a second language C.the research done on the Italians showed a totally different result

D.it will be easier for one to travel around the world by learning a second language 24. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Learning a second language can help improve your brain power.

B.You should learn a second language in English that is not your native language. C.If you want to learn a second language, you should do it at a certain age. D.The research done by the researchers from UCL is very successful.

A shopkeeper sent his son to learn about the secret of happiness from the wisest man in the world. The boy walked a long way, and finally came upon a beautiful castle where the wise man lived.

Rather than finding a holy man, though, our hero, on entering the main room of the castle, saw a hive(喧闹场所) of activity: tradesmen came and went, people were chatting in the corners and a small orchestra was playing soft music. The wise man talked with everyone, and the boy had to wait for two hours before it was his turn.

The wise man listened carefully to the boy’s explanation of why he had come, but told him that he didn’t have time just then to explain the secret of happiness. He suggested the boy look around the palace and return in two hours.“Meanwhile, I want to ask you to do something,” said the wise man, handing the boy a teaspoon that held two drops of oil. “As you wander around, carry this spoon with you without allowing the oil to spill”.

The boy began to walk up and down stairs in the palace, keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. After two hours, he returned.

- 3 -

“Well,” asked the wise man, “Did you see the Persian tapestries (波斯织锦) hanging in my dining hall? Did you see the garden that it took the master gardener 10 years to create?”

The boy was embarrassed, and replied that he had observed nothing. His only concern had been not to spill the oil. “Then go back and observe the wonderful things of my world,” said the wise man.

Then the boy picked up the spoon and returned to his exploration of the palace, this time observing all of the works of art on the ceilings and the walls. He saw the gardens and the mountains all around him. When he returned, he described in detail everything he had seen. “But where are the drops of oil I gave to you?” asked the wise man. Looking down at the spoon he held, the boy saw that the oil was gone.

“Well, there is only one piece of advice I can give you,” said the wise man. “The secret of happiness is to see all the wonders of the world and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.”

25. When the shopkeeper’s son arrived at the castle, he ______. A.received warm welcome from the wise man B.didn’t expect to see so many people around

C.was shown around the palace by the local people

D.had already missed his chance to talk to the wise man 26. The wise man gave the boy two tasks in order to ______. A.let the boy enjoy his palace and garden

B.show him how to observe the wonderful things in the world C.make him learn from his mistakes D.teach him the secret of happiness

27. We can infer from the article that “the drops of oil on the spoon” probably refer to ______. A.the beauty of nature

B.the fortune a person owns

C.the responsibilities of a person D.the great opportunities in life

28 . Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

C.The wise man wasn’t paying much attention to the boy at first. D.The boy took no notice of the surroundings during his first task. C

If you are planning a visit to Chicago, make sure you see the city best before you head back home.

Architecture

Chicago is home to some of the most fascinating architecture in the country. One of the oldest buildings in the city is the Water Tower, which was built in 1869. It is one of the structures to survive the Chicago Fire in 1871. It is a fascinating building to see, and is nearby the Water Tower Place, which has great shopping. It’s a paradise(天堂) for the young. Another stop must be the Willes Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower. Go to the top and walk out on the clear walkway to take a look straight down on the city. If you have the time, be sure to have dinner or a cocktail in the Signature Room on the 95th floor. Not only is the food great, but the views are

- 4 -

breathtaking. Boat Tours

If architecture is your thing, Wendella Boats offers a great architecture tour of Chicago. 29. Water Tower Place is so popular among young people most probably because of ______. A.its advantage of meeting his or her future partner B.its amusement services and shopping advantages C.there being many museums about art and literature

31. Why does the author advise visitors to try pizza in Chicago?. A.Because its cheese comes from Italy.

B.Because the Chicago-style is really impressive. C.Because there are so many chain stores from Italy. D.Because its style is completely the same as that in Italy. D

Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is one of the four inner planets. The other three inner planets are Mercury, Venus, and Mars. The inner planets are also called the rocky planets, because they are made of rocks.

Earth is often called the “Water Planet”, because it is the only planet in our solar system which has liquid water on its surface. About 70% of the surface of Earth is covered by water! The other part of Earth is made up of continents and islands which have different landforms on them. Examples of landforms are mountains and plains. Plants and animals can live on Earth, because it has so much water.

Earth spins very quickly compared to other planets. It only takes Earth 24 hours to spin around its axis(轴心) one time. One Earth day is 24 hours long! Earth orbits the sun in 365 days! This makes one Earth year 365 days long!

Earth is the only planet in our solar system where humans, other animals, and plants can live. There is plenty of water to drink or to live in. Water is present on Earth in its big oceans and

- 5 -

in the air! Clouds are made of water vapor(蒸汽). The atmosphere has a lot of oxygen in it for animals to breathe, but the rest of our “air” is made up of water vapor, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. The air is perfect for plants to grow. Earth temperature is not the same in all places, but the temperature is just right for plants, animals, and humans in most places on Earth. Like the other inner planets, Earth has volcanoes. Volcanoes on Earth are different from those on other planets, because they still erupt. Scientists think that there may be active volcanoes on other planets and moons in our solar system, but they are still studying this.

Earth has one planet which we call the Moon. The surface of the Moon has many craters(火山口) on it. These were caused when meteorites hit it. It has many volcanoes on it which do not erupt anymore. We can see the moon at night without using a telescope. It is the closest space object to our planet ,Earth.

32. Earth is called the Water Planet,______.

A. because animals need water B. the water makes it look blue from space C. it has liquid water on its surface D. Earth is the third planet from the sun 33. It takes Earth ______to orbit the sun in one year.

A.24 hours B.24 days C.365 days D.360 days 34. Life exists on Earth,______.

A. because the water, air, and temperature are just right B. there is water vapor in clouds

C. Earth is the planet closest to the sun D. earth has volcanoes

35.The craters on the moon were caused by______.

A. meteorites hitting its surface B. active volcanoes

C. volcanoes which do not erupt anymore D. some reasons that are not mentioned
