In 1995, Ma went to the United States with his friends and was introduced to the internet. He was amazed by the possibilities it presented and saw the potential for e-commerce in China. He returned to China and started his first company, China Pages, a directory of Chinese

businesses.

In 1999, Ma founded Alibaba Group with a group of friends in his apartment. At the time, e-commerce was still in its early stages in China, and many people were skeptical of his idea. However, Ma was determined to succeed and worked tirelessly to build his company.
