In the 12 years I've spent coaching others, I've recognized patte rns that hold us back from success. Here I share some of the most powerful lessons I've learned along the way.
1.you compare yourself with others
Whether it's starting a business or learning a new skill, you will look at others who are much further down the road from you and expect your results to be similar to theirs, today. Since you cannot see the struggle, the mistakes and the hundreds of little improvements they made every single day, you suppose these never existed. By comparison you feel incapable and discouraged.
Shiftyour focus instead to where you are today compared to yesterday toget a more accurate picture of the progress you're making.
2. | . | |
| |
|
You want those you care about to approve. You create a story that their approval means you're on the right path. You don't want to disappoint. And so you end up stuck by a rough comment, or an unenthusiastic reaction. I'll never forget my uncle giving me a pained look while telling me, "Why are you still in London? Come back to Malta with your family." Ouch that really hurt, but had I listened, I'd be stuck .in a dead-end job, living a life that was |
killingmy soul.
3.You wait for the "right" time.
Youkeep putting something off because it's not the "right"time yet. You need to make a few more improvements, get moreexperience, and Team a few more skills. You wait for the economy toimprove, the weather to get better or for a sign that you shouldstart. The right time is now. Only by starting will you discover whatelse needs to be done or improved, never before.
4.Yousuppose talent rather than persistence is the secret to success
"IfI had any talent, this would be much easier. I'm not cut out forthis." When you start your project, you discover it's a steepuphill struggle to get where you want. You make it mean you'relacking in some way, that maybe you should aim a little lower or trysomething easier. Don't bury into this mindset. Anything you do willget easier the more you do it. So keep working at it and eventuallyyou'll find.yourself at the top of that hill.
60. The first paragraph of the passage serves as | .
| . | ||
A. an introduction to the topic | B. an example to support the topic
C. a warning fo readers | D. a description of a personal story
61. In the eyes of the writer, you are unsuccessful for the reason that
|
A.you focus on where you are today B. you stress how a success makesit C. you feel desperate by comparison D. you fail to compare withothers 62. Which of the following can be filled in the blank of thepassage?
A. You wait for others' approval. | B. You are not flexible. | . |
C. You deserve resvect and love. | D. You expect instant results.
63. According to the last two lessons, the secret to success is
|
A.getting started when you are better improved
B.waiting for the economy to turn for the better
C.aiming a little lower due to the lack of a talent
D.sticking to what you have started till you succeed

Getrid of addictions while you sleep?Weizmann Institute researcher Dr.Arzi is not
promisingthis yet, but she and Prof.Sobel have shown that changing bad habitsthrough sleep conditioning could someday
bepossible
Afterjust one session in the Neurobiology(神经生物学)Department'ssleep lab, volunteers reported smoking on average 30% fewercigarettes over the course of a week. Volunteers given the sameconditioning while awake did not reduce theirnicotine(尼古丁)coqsumption.
Arziand Sobel had first presented true sleep Teaming in 2012. This is thesame conditioning that Pavlov, a Russian physiologist is bestknown, for discovering the conditioned response, discovered when hetrained dogs to salivate(过量分泌唾液)atthe sound of a bell: Teach the mind to subconsciously associate onesense with another. Their twist was to use smell instead of the bell:We can register and even react to smells while we sleep withoutwaking up. So when the volunteers were exposed throughout the nightto the smell of cigarette smoke together with that of rotten fish didnot remember it in the morning. And yet their need for a “ciggy”
wasnot as strong as it had been.
Thesecond trick was to monitor the sleepers' brain waves and give thesmells at the right stage
ofsleep. The group's previous research had suggested that theassociations are formed and firmed in the brain duringnon-rapid-eye-movement(NREM) sleep一thestage in which researchers believe
thatmemories from the previous day are being strengthened. The new studysupported this finding quite strongly. Arzi points out that theresearch has proven a point about the workings of the sleeping brainShe will be pleased, of course, if clinical researchers adopt themethod and improve on it.
68.According to the passage, volunteers smoked 30% fewer cigarettesprobably because A. Arzi and Sobel tried to prevent them fromsmoking too much
B. they were exposed to the smell of cigarette smoke while awake
C. smoking too much will reduce the effect of their sleep learning
D. they were exposed to the smell of smoke and rotten fish whilesleeping
69.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Arzi is best known for discovering the conditioned response.
B.We can respond to smells while we sleep without waking up C. Pavlovtrained dogs to ring bells and recognize cigarette smells.
D.Memories from the previous day will lose during NREM sleep.
70.The underlined word "ciggy" in Paragraph 2 probably means“”
A. Cigarette | B. Fish | C. Dog | D. Bell |

Version1
Thefun game implies thatsuccess calls for such factors as luck, knowledge and hard work, especially attitude. Inmy opinion, it is attitude that determines everything althoughknowledge is power and hard work can bring us harvest.
Asis often the case, our attitude determines how we feel and what willbecome of our knowledge and hard work. For example, a positiveattitude is certain to help us achieve our goals, but whether we feeloptimistic or not lies in what attitudes we choose. Keeping positivecan give us hope and improve our working efficiency, while beingpessimistic only makes us feel desperate or even give up at last.
Inshort, we should keep a good attitude towards anything. After all, agood attitude is bound to make life brighter.
Thereis no doubt that no one could succeed without a good attitude. (143words)
Version2:
Thefun game implies thatsuccess calls for such factors as luck, knowledge and hard work, especially attitude. In my opinion, it is attitude that determines everything althoughknowledge is power and hard work can bring us harvest.
Istill remember how hard it was for me when I began to learn Englishapproximately six years ago. The more time I spent on it, the moredisgusted I was with it. However hard I tried, I still couldn’t dowell in it. Fortunately, my English teacher helped me change myattitude towards English before I gave it up. Apparently, it’sattitude rather than other factors that determines my English study.
Inshort, we should keep a good attitude towards anything. After all, agood attitude is bound to make life brighter. There is no doubt thatno one could succeed without a good attitude.

W:Oh, this it! This is the perfect location for our new store!
M:Sorry, but this space isn’t zoned for retail. It’s zoned foroffices.
W:But couldn’t we get the zoning commission to re-zone it?
M:That’s not an easy process. The city’s urban planners decidedthat this space would be best suited for offices. Changing theirminds won’t be easy.
W:I’ve heard that a lot of new developments are being zoned for mixeduse. That’s all we need to do. We just need this building to bere-zoned for mixed use. Then, we can use the space downstairs forcommercial purposes and use the upstairs space for offices or evenhousing.

M:China’s other surfer girl is Monica Guo, a Guilin native who nowlives and surfs in Hainan. Guo is a self-described sport girl.Growing up she always loved running, basketball, bicycle, rockclimbing and then she found surfing. Here comes Monica Guo. Welcome!
W:Thank you.
M:How did you get into surfing?
W:I started surfing in 2008, but I was aware of the sport since I wasin high school. My friend from Australia said, “ hey I can teachyou how to surf!”. So we went to Langtao island in Hong Kong. Thewaves there are so good for learning, so smooth. The beach has noone, the water is clean, it’s really good. I stopped surfing, because I had to go back to work in Guilin. But then I had a chanceto come back to Hainan, and I saw the waves. Oh my gosh, I was soexcited. I had no idea China had these kinds of waves, it was socrazy. I decided I wanted to stay and live here, because surfing isjust too much fun.

M:All done.
W:You’re done with your paper? How can that be? I’m just gettingstarted/ M: I’m just a better student than you are.
W:Let me see that. You didn’t write this.
M:No, I didn’t. I downloaded somebody’s paper from some website andslapped my name on it. The professor will never know. Wise up. Do you want me to find one for you?
W:No way! Not only is it cheating, if you get caught, you could notpass the class.
M:Don’t be such a nice person. Everybody does it. I know a guy whopays somebody in another state to write all of his papers for him andanother guy who lifts his papers from old books. Don’t tell meyou’ve never copied ideas from a source and represented them asyour own.
W:I’d rather earn what I get and know that I didn’t cheat myselfout of an education!
